01 · How it works

Origins & Action

DMT activates serotonin 5-HT2A receptors and other targets including 5-HT1A, 5-HT2C, and sigma-1 systems. It is rapidly broken down by MAO-A when taken orally without an MAOI.

02 · Immediate effects

Recognize the effects

Signs of Use

  • Dilated pupils and elevated heart rate
  • Fractal visuals or vibrating sounds
  • Sensory detachment and ego loss
  • Motor immobility or sudden collapse
  • Panic, sweating, or confusion

Short Term

  • Immersive visual and auditory experiences
  • Time distortion and altered identity
  • Blood pressure and pulse elevation
  • Nausea or vomiting with ayahuasca
  • Acute fear or existential distress

Long Term

  • Rare persistent visual disturbances
  • Possible psychosis or mania in vulnerable people
  • Derealization or depersonalization
  • No typical physical dependence or withdrawal

03 · Long-term consequences

MAOI interaction hazard

Ayahuasca combines DMT with MAOIs, which can make it orally active and create dangerous interactions with serotonergic medications.

Medical emergency

Identifying an emergency

Clonus, high fever, seizures, hypertensive crisis, injury, or failure to regain consciousness require 911.
