01 · How it works

Classification and primary mechanism

These compounds bind directly to cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) and type 2 (CB2) receptors throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. CB1 binding in the brain inhibits the release of neurotransmitters such as GABA and glutamate, altering sensory processing, appetite, and emotional regulation. Unlike naturally occurring Delta-9 THC, Delta-8, Delta-10, and HHC occur only in negligible amounts in raw cannabis and are chemically synthesized from hemp-derived CBD through acid-catalyzed cyclization or hydrogenation. Acetate esters like THC-O-acetate act as prodrugs that convert into active THC metabolites in the body.

02 · Immediate effects

Recognize the effects

Signs of Use

  • Red eyes (conjunctival injection) and dry mouth
  • Relaxation, mild euphoria, and altered time perception
  • Increased appetite and mild rapid heart rate
  • Slowed thinking, impaired memory, and spatial disorientation
  • Colorful gummies, flavored vape carts, or tinctures labeled Delta-8, Delta-10, THC-O, or HHC

Short Term

  • Low to moderate: relaxation, sensory enhancement, mild euphoria, mild cognitive sluggishness, red eyes, dry mouth, and increased appetite
  • Moderate to high: impaired working memory, spatial disorientation, acute anxiety, psychomotor slowing, dizziness, low blood pressure on standing, palpitations, and nausea
  • Acute toxicity ("greening out"): severe panic, paranoia, depersonalization, transient hallucinations, and acute confusion
  • Severe vomiting, fainting, profound loss of coordination, and marked tachycardia
  • Alcohol speeds cannabinoid absorption, causing rapid severe nausea, dizziness, and vomiting

Long Term

  • Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome: cycles of intractable vomiting, severe abdominal pain, and compulsive hot showering for relief
  • Pulmonary complications from vaping carrier oils, solvents, and degradation products: chronic cough, wheezing, and lipoid pneumonia
  • CB1 receptor down-regulation causing blunted motivation, working-memory deficits, and psychological dependence
  • Withdrawal after regular use: rebound insomnia, vivid disturbing dreams, irritability, loss of appetite, and sweating

03 · Long-term consequences

Dangerous polydrug interactions

Alcohol significantly accelerates absorption, leading to rapid, severe nausea, dizzy spells, and vomiting. Stimulants such as Adderall or cocaine compound sympathetic stimulation, causing rapid heart rates, severe blood-pressure spikes, and acute panic. With sedatives and other CNS depressants, motor coordination collapses and reaction times drop severely, drastically raising the risk of falls, crashes, and trauma.

Medical emergency

Identifying an emergency

Toxicity presents as uncontrollable vomiting, profound panic or paranoia, a rapid pounding heartbeat, dizziness or fainting on standing, and confusion. Move the person to a quiet, low-stimulation, well-ventilated space. If they are vomiting repeatedly, keep them upright or on their side in the recovery position to protect the airway. Offer small sips of water and avoid caffeine or any further substances.

Call 911 for chest pain, a heart rate that stays dangerously high, or unresponsiveness—unregulated products frequently conceal novel synthetic cannabinoids or adulterants.
