Nicotine

A powerful stimulant found in combusted tobacco, vapes, oral pouches, smokeless tobacco, and nicotine-replacement products.

01 · Classification

How nicotine works

Nicotine is a naturally occurring pyridine alkaloid, central nervous system stimulant, and autonomic ganglion agonist.

It binds presynaptic nicotinic acetylcholine receptors throughout the brain and peripheral nervous system, triggering dopamine release in the mesolimbic nucleus accumbens. It also releases norepinephrine, acetylcholine, glutamate, and beta-endorphin.

Activation of adrenal receptors releases epinephrine, causing vasoconstriction, increased vascular resistance, a faster heart rate, and an immediate blood-pressure spike.

02 · Products and context

Where nicotine is found

Commercial forms

Cigarettes, cigars, disposable vapes, pods, oral pouches, smokeless dip, patches, gum, and lozenges.

Youth and adolescent impact

Flavored synthetic pouches and modern disposable vaporizers are engineered for rapid absorption, which can drive dependence among youth who have never smoked tobacco.

Medical emergency

Nicotine poisoning

Heavy exposure can cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sweating, confusion, tremors, abnormal heart rhythms, seizures, and breathing problems. Call Poison Control or 911 for severe symptoms, especially after liquid exposure.

Keep e-liquids and nicotine products away from children and pets. Do not induce vomiting after an ingestion; contact Poison Control for instructions.

Unregulated supply

Counterfeit and cartridge hazards

Black-market vape cartridges may contain toxic thermal-degradation agents, unauthorized flavoring compounds such as diacetyl, and residual contaminants. Product labels cannot guarantee contents or dose.

03 · Long-term consequences

Risks of repeated exposure

Rapid dependence

Nicotine activates reward pathways within seconds, reinforcing compulsive use and tolerance across combusted, vaped, and oral products.

Cardiovascular strain

Adrenaline-driven vasoconstriction raises heart rate, vascular resistance, and blood pressure.

Youth impact

High-potency disposable vapes and flavored pouches can establish physical dependence in adolescents who have never smoked.

Product hazards

Unregulated cartridges may contain toxic thermal degradation products, unauthorized flavoring chemicals, or residual contaminants.
