01 · How it works

Prodrug conversion

Lisdexamfetamine is converted inside red blood cells into active dextroamphetamine, which increases dopamine and norepinephrine signaling. Its conversion is rate-limited, but high or non-prescribed exposure can still cause severe stimulant toxicity.

02 · Immediate effects

Recognize the effects

Signs of Use

  • Dilated pupils and reduced appetite
  • Rapid speech or unusual confidence
  • Sweating, jaw tension, or agitation
  • Insomnia and repetitive activity
  • Paranoia or tactile hallucinations

Short Term

  • Increased focus and wakefulness
  • Elevated heart rate and blood pressure
  • Euphoria or overconfidence at high exposure
  • Anxiety, tremor, and overheating
  • Seizures or arrhythmias in severe toxicity

Long Term

  • Tolerance and stimulant dependence
  • Sleep debt and nutritional depletion
  • Cardiovascular strain
  • Depression and fatigue during withdrawal
  • Stimulant-induced psychosis

03 · Long-term consequences

Sympathomimetic toxicity

High doses can cause dangerous hyperthermia, hypertension, arrhythmias, seizures, and psychosis. MAOIs and other stimulants substantially increase risk.

Medical emergency

Identifying an emergency

Chest pain, hot skin, severe confusion, seizure, irregular pulse, collapse, or loss of consciousness require 911. Cool the person and clear nearby hazards.
